Friends with Benefits: A Social Media Marketing Handbook

Not a bad book. But not a particularly good one either. Social media marketing is not a new thing these days. And there have been quite a number of books written about the subject. This book doesn’t really explain anything new. Nor does it do a better job of explaining what has already been covered fairly well in a number of previous books. And there probably was too much coverage of Myspace, and no coverage of LinkedIn.
Included in an appendix of recommended readings are a few books that related to social media marketing. Emphasis should be place on “few.” So even the recommended reading list is less than. Funny thing about the reading list is it contained a reference to Marketing in the Age of Google: Your Online Strategy IS Your Business Strategy which looked like it might be an interesting read. I’d never heard of it. When I got home and looked it up on Amazon I learned the book will not be released until May, 2010. How can the authors recommend a book that has not even been released yet? Doesn’t make sense to me.
If you have been stuck under a rock for at least the last few years and finally want to join the real world and you’d like to read a reasonable tome about blogs, microblogs, photo sharing, video sharing, podcasts, Web events, discussion forums, RSS feeds, social network sites, and wikis, then consider getting this book. I found it to be well written and pretty straightforward as to its outlining. Take a look at the Search Inside feature that Amazon provides for this book to see exactly what is covered.
Anyone who has been blogging since 2001 or 2004 should have quite a following if they know what they are doing. The authors tell us they have been blogging since then. And since the book at present only has five simple book reviews posted on Amazon I have to wonder if the authors really know what they are doing. This book could have easily been written by someone with no experience with social media marketing, but who has read the existing publications available and merely written a “research paper.” The book had the feel of being a mere research paper to me. It was that basic.
If the book had been more unique or provided something cutting edge, then I would have given it 4 stars. However, it’s nothing special and thus is just OK. 3 stars!

I’m not exagurating. Unless you’ve been living under the rock and want to know what’s going on in the world of the Internet – this book could ( but don’t count on it ) be useful to you. The whole book is complete garbage. Stating obvious facts that even a five year old knows is not good enough to call it a book. I have learned nothing about the Facebook or Twitter that my 11 year old doesn’t already know. So, save some money and time!

This is a basic overview of sites: MySpace, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. Much beyond explaining each of the sites and their basic functionality, this book lacks depth. Social media 101 here.

Social media democratizes communications, allowing anybody to become a publisher, from YouTube videos, to blog posts, to twitter messages. Personally, the Presidential elections of 2008 got me interested in social media, as I saw how a skillful use of social media technology generated a network effect to successfully change the outcome of the elections.
Both the social media technology and the people habits using it continue to evolve daily. The amount of literature about social networking keeps growing in step with the changes in this domain. Unfortunately, none of the books can cover all of this topic alone. That’s why these four books make a small course in this most important field starting from
1. Motivation (Gary Vaynerchuk, Crush It!: Why NOW Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion),
2. Etiquette (Chris Brogan and Julien Smith, Trust Agents: Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation, and Earn Trust),
3. Practice (Tris Hussey, Create Your Own Blog: 6 Easy Projects to Start Blogging Like a Pro), and
4. Encyclopedia (Darren Barefoot and Julie Szabo, Friends with Benefits: A Social Media Marketing Handbook).
The degree of your own engagement in Internet marketing would guide you in deciding how many of these books would you read and in what order. For a motivational overview and a personal example, read Gary Vaynerchuk’s Why Now is The Time to Crush. If you want to know how to behave and what kind of response to expect when participating in the blogosphere, read Chris Brogan’s and Julien Smith’s Trust Agents. To figure out how to build your own blog to promote your own product or service, read Tris Hussey’s Create Your Own Blog.
For a comprehensive reference handbook, skip all three introductory texts above, buy Barefoot’s and Szabo’s Friends with Benefits, keep it close, and use it frequently.
